Riding in from Copper Harbor on the Sea-Doo, I explore two of the Keweenaw’s most isolated lighthouses: the 1861 Manitou Island Light Station and the incredibly small Gull Rock Light perched on a slab of volcanic bedrock. On Manitou Island, we hike along rugged volcanic shoreline, untouched forest, and pass by arctic-alpine plants and a thriving bird sanctuary. The Huron Islands are a group of eight rocky islands sitting about three miles off the coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, on Lake Superior between Skanee and Big Bay. I left from Skanee and after about a 13-mile Sea-Doo ride, I landed on one of the most remote and rugged places in Michigan. From the small landing dock, it’s about a half-mile hike to the historic Huron Island Lighthouse, which has guided ships since 1868. The old fog signal building sits a little over a mile beyond the lighthouse, overlooking the vast expanse of Lake Superior and the tips of the Huron Mountains. Just outside Reykjavík lies Draugahellir, also known as the Ghost Cave. It’s part of the Maríuhellar lava tube system, a network of caves formed thousands of years ago by volcanic activity. Locals have long whispered about this cave having a haunting energy, and after exploring it myself, I understand why. As I ventured deeper into the dark passages, I came across something strange: red candles arranged on the cave rock, almost like part of a ritual or ceremony.
